North Point

North Point

The North Point, Silver Street, Portland, ME

When you are looking to partake in happy hour on a blazing hot afternoon there are a few things that will set a place apart.  1. Outside seating.  2. Shade.  3. A nice breeze.   Which is exactly what we found at The North Point last week for our holiday weekend Happy Hour.

The North Point is located at 35 Silver Street, directly across from the Regency Hotel.  It’s a cozy place but luckily they have a patio area set up on the sidewalk.  It being a long holiday weekend we were joined by visiting friends so we ended up being a very large group of 15.  Thanks to a couple extra chairs and a bench they were able to accomodate us easily.

The North Point features a large wine list and 10 local beers on tap.  Happy Hour specials feature $4 glasses of wine and $3 beers!  (Note: On Monday’s after six they offer 1/2 off bottles of  wine.) Serving sizes of wine are very generous, arriving at your table with in a carafe.  For whites, fresh chilled glasses were brought as well.  An awesome touch in the sweltering heat.  We loved that! I initially ordered the blush sangria, which was not on special but it just sounded cool and crisp.  When it arrived in a mason jar, it also came with a spoon.  Very handy for eating up the delicious fruit at the bottom of the glass!  It was like a good drink and fruit salad all rolled into one tasty cocktail!

Mmmm....cool and refreshing! Everything a great summer sangria should be!

After that I followed it with a glass (or two!) of Gruner.  A crisp, delicious white from Austria that came recommended by Abby.  Others enjoyed the local brews, Allagash White being a great favorite and glasses of wine.  Overall it was a great experience and a wonderful way to spend the afternoon in Portland with good friends.  My only complaint is that our waitress forgot my wine. Twice.  Yes we were a large group and others were ordering the same thing but it was only mine that got forgotten.   It wasn’t grievous enough that I wouldn’t recommend the place or revisit but very annoying.

When the check came, instead of mints or chocolates we got cookies!  A homey touch that I found really nice at the end of a great afternoon.

Yum!
Yum!

Overal I’d rate Happy Hour at The North Point as a good experience.  Go check it out for yourself!
